Both of these platforms use AI to screen candidates. That’s where the similarities end.
HireVue has been in the game since 2004. They pioneered video interviewing. Nearly half of the Fortune 100 have run candidates through their platforms, and they’ve facilitated more than 80 million interviews worldwide. That’s not nothing. That’s two decades of enterprise sales, integrations, and brand recognition.
SageScreen launched in 2025. We’re not going to pretend we have twenty years of Fortune 100 contracts under our belt. What we have is twenty years of watching what the industry built, where it broke, and what it quietly hoped no one would ask about.
This isn’t a takedown. HireVue doesn’t need one; the public record handles that on its own. This is a comparison across the dimensions that actually matter when AI is involved in decisions about people’s careers: how the AI works, what it can see, who actually decides, and whether anyone can explain what just happened.
The market has options now. And options are how accountability happens.
What They Do: The 30-Second Version
Here’s the simplest way to think about it: HireVue is a video interviewing platform that added AI. SageScreen is an AI screening platform that was born that way.
How the AI Actually Works
This is the part most comparison articles skip, because it’s easier to list features than explain architecture. But architecture is philosophy made tangible. It tells you what the builders actually believe.
HireVue’s AI analyzes candidate responses (word choice, speech patterns, content) and generates scores and rankings. The system was originally built on facial analysis and vocal tone assessment, both of which have since been removed (more on that shortly). What remains is an NLP-based evaluation that produces candidate scores, predictions of job success, and comparative rankings. The algorithm doesn’t just observe. It renders a verdict.

SageScreen’s architecture is split on purpose. The AI that conducts the interview (the Sage) guides the conversation, adapts to the candidate’s responses, and follows a rubric without ever scoring anything. A completely separate AI evaluator, one that was not present during the interview, later applies the same rubric to the transcript and produces a structured result. No scores. No rankings. No curve. The output is whether the candidate demonstrated alignment with the role expectations, along with plain-language context explaining why.

The Bias Question Nobody Wants to Answer
Let’s just walk the timeline.
HireVue added AI-driven facial analysis to video interviews in 2013. In 2019, the Electronic Privacy Information Center filed a complaint with the FTC alleging unfair and deceptive practices. In early 2021, HireVue dropped facial analysis after their own data showed it contributed roughly 0.25% to predictive accuracy. They later removed vocal tone analysis after customer concerns. Their third-party audit, conducted by ORCAA, required a nondisclosure agreement to download. The Center for Democracy and Technology reviewed HireVue’s explainability statement and found it failed to meaningfully explain how their game-based assessments actually work. In 2025, the ACLU filed a complaint on behalf of a deaf candidate whose AI evaluation recommended she “practice active listening.”
To their credit, HireVue has invested in bias monitoring, third-party audits, and ongoing model review. That matters. But the pattern (build it, ship it, receive criticism, remove it) is a pattern. And the broader AI hiring industry faces similar scrutiny.
SageScreen doesn’t do facial analysis. We don’t do emotion detection. We don’t assess appearance, environment, or presentation style. We don’t analyze vocal tone. Not because we removed those features. Because we never built them. Our evaluators work from transcripts. They don’t see faces, hear voices, or react to how someone performs under the specific pressure of talking to a camera.

The platform is designed for organizations with 2,500 to 7,500+ employees. If you’re smaller than that, you’re not their target market and the pricing will remind you.

Who’s Actually Making the Decision?
Both platforms will tell you that humans make the final call. The question is whether the system is designed to make that claim true, or just technically defensible.
HireVue generates scores, rankings, and predictions. Their own 2025 Global Hiring report positions AI as a “decision-support tool, not a decision-maker.” But when a hiring manager sees Candidate A scored 87 and Candidate B scored 62, the decision is already shaped. The AI didn’t force anything. It just made the alternative feel irrational. That’s not support. That’s anchoring.
SageScreen doesn’t produce scores. There are no rankings. No automated gates, no workflow locks, no hidden enforcement mechanisms. The system outputs a structured evaluation with supporting context: the candidate either demonstrated alignment with the role expectations or they didn’t, and here’s what was said that led to that assessment. No number to anchor to. No leaderboard to defer to.
Real human oversight requires that the AI doesn’t hand you a conclusion dressed up as data. The moment you see a score, you’re anchored to it. That’s not a design flaw on HireVue’s part. It’s a design choice. And it tells you everything about what the platform actually believes regarding who should be deciding.
Hiring decisions should be explainable, auditable, and made by people. That’s not a tagline. It’s an architecture constraint. And the architecture either enforces it or it doesn’t.
The Thing That Should Keep You Up at Night
Here’s the question that ties everything else together.
If a candidate asks you why they didn’t advance past the screening stage, can you answer them? Not with generalities. With specifics. Can your legal team audit the AI’s process and explain it to a regulator? Can you tell the EEOC exactly how evaluations were generated, what data was used, and why one candidate was assessed differently than another?
HireVue’s own explainability statement was reviewed by the Center for Democracy and Technology, which found it incomplete in critical areas, particularly around game-based assessments where it was unclear how they were validated or tested for bias. Their third-party audit required an NDA. Their chief data scientist acknowledged the tension between transparency and preventing candidates from gaming the system. Under EU and UK data regulations, HireVue has positioned employers (not HireVue) as responsible for explaining AI-driven hiring decisions to candidates.
SageScreen’s position is simpler: if we can’t explain what we’re doing clearly, we shouldn’t be doing it at all. The architecture is built so that every evaluation can be traced. Transcripts, rubrics, evaluator outputs, and the intermediate artifacts that connect them. Candidates are told upfront that AI is involved, how the process works, and what data is collected. There are no hidden steps.
Transparency isn’t one feature among many. It’s the foundation.
Speed doesn’t matter if you can’t explain the result. Bias mitigation doesn’t matter if you can’t audit the process. Human oversight doesn’t matter if the humans can’t see what the AI actually did.

The Verdict (Not a Verdict)
We’re not here to tell you what to choose. HireVue is a mature platform with two decades of enterprise infrastructure, deep ATS integrations, and a client list that speaks for itself. If you’re a Fortune 100 company with a dedicated HR tech team, a six-month implementation runway, and six figures in annual budget, it may serve you well.
But if you want to know how your AI actually works (not in a whitepaper, but in plain language you can repeat to a candidate) the landscape has shifted. If you need to move in minutes instead of months, screen any role without being a subject matter expert, and keep the final decision exactly where it belongs, with people, the conversation is different now.
